With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sharon Askew on March 9, 2026, after a short illness.
Sharon is lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Tom; daughter Jacquie (Marcel) Van De Woestyne; granddaughters, Shelby (Josh) Brock and Kylie Van De Woestyne (Carter Mushumanski); and great-grandsons, Lincoln and Parker.
Born in Yorkton, SK, Sharon spent her early years in Nova Scotia and Winnipeg, where she met Tom on a blind date. They married on New Year’s Eve and made Brandon their home in 1969.
Sharon worked as head librarian at Fleming School and later with the Brandon Police Service, promoting children’s safety as “Safety Sal” and helping establish the Victim Services Program. Her compassion touched many lives.
Family was at the heart of everything Sharon did. She loved attending her granddaughters’ activities, cheering at drag races, sharing weekly suppers with Kylie during university, and becoming a proud great-grandma to Lincoln and Parker. She was thrilled to learn Kylie and Carter are expecting twin boys in April 2026.
Sharon and Tom enjoyed several memorable cruises with friends, visiting Alaska, the Maritimes, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal. They also spent 32 winters as snowbirds in Mesa, AZ, where they made many cherished friendships that she treasured deeply.
Sharon found joy in crafting, gardening, feeding the birds, and always having a book on the go.
The family sincerely thanks the staff at Banner Hospital in Mesa and the A3 team at the Brandon Regional Health Centre for their exceptional care.
In keeping with Sharon’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. Donations in her memory may be made to the Brandon Humane Society.
